Nick Hewer: From Alan Sugar’s Trusted Adviser to a British Television Favourite

Nick Hewer built his name in business long before he became a familiar face on British television. With his sharp observations, raised eyebrows and dry humour, he won fans on The Apprentice before taking charge of Countdown. His career is an unusual story of hard work, an unexpected change of direction and success well past the age when many people retire. Born in Swindon in 1944, he spent decades helping major businesses manage their image. Today, his story covers much more than television, from family life and property to charity work and an enduring friendship with Lord Sugar.

Nick Hewer Age and Early Life

Nick Hewer was born on 17 February 1944 in Swindon, Wiltshire. He turned 82 in February 2026. His father, John David Radbourn Hewer, was a veterinary surgeon, while his mother was Mary Patricia Hewer, née Jamison. Veterinary medicine had been part of the family for generations, but the young Nicholas chose a different path.

He grew up with two brothers and two sisters and attended Clongowes Wood College, a Jesuit boarding school in County Kildare, Ireland. He gained a place to study law at Trinity College Dublin, but the cost prevented him from taking it up. Instead, he moved towards a working life in London. His Irish education also left him with strong ties to the country. Years later, he explored his family history on the BBC programme Who Do You Think You Are?, sharing a more personal side of his life with viewers.

    How His Business Career Began

In the 1960s, he entered public relations, learning how companies worked with journalists, customers and investors. He went on to lead his own consultancy, building a reputation for handling difficult business situations. The work demanded long hours, good judgement and an ability to stay calm when a client faced criticism.

His biggest professional connection began in 1983. His firm started working with Amstrad, the electronics company founded by Alan Sugar. The relationship lasted more than two decades and grew into a close friendship. Hewer helped manage communications during an important period in the company’s history. He sold his firm in 1997 and planned to enjoy retirement, including time at his home in south-west France. Yet a surprising invitation was about to change his life.

    Nick Hewer and The Apprentice

When the British version of The Apprentice launched in 2005, Lord Sugar wanted someone he trusted to watch the candidates during their tasks. He turned to his long-time business associate, who had no plans to become a television star. Hewer joined Margaret Mountford as one of Sugar’s advisers. Their job was to observe teams, examine decisions and explain what had gone wrong in the boardroom. His thoughtful comments and expressive reactions became as memorable as the business challenges themselves.

Why Did He Leave The Apprentice?

Margaret Mountford left her regular role in 2009, and Karren Brady joined the programme in 2010. Hewer stayed until the tenth series in 2014. He then decided that the demanding filming schedule was too tiring, especially after years of following contestants through long days. His departure was his own choice. Claude Littner later took the adviser position, while Hewer continued to enjoy a warm relationship with Sugar and the programme.

    A Return in 2026

On 16 April 2026, he returned for the twentieth-series finale alongside Margaret Mountford. The special appearance brought two familiar figures back to the boardroom. It was a guest visit rather than a return to his former full-time role. In June 2026, organisers of a November industry conference named him as a guest speaker, highlighting continued demand for his business experience.

    Nick Hewer Countdown Career

In November 2011, Channel 4 announced that Hewer would replace Jeff Stelling as presenter of Countdown. His first episode aired on 9 January 2012. He worked with maths expert Rachel Riley and dictionary expert Susie Dent, guiding contestants through letters, numbers and the famous final conundrum. The move showed another side of his personality. Instead of judging business hopefuls, he welcomed ordinary contestants and kept the atmosphere friendly. His humour suited the quiet pace of the long-running quiz, and Channel 4 recorded an early increase in viewing figures after he arrived.

The programme was already an important part of British daytime television when he arrived. Richard Whiteley had helped establish its place on Channel 4, so taking the presenter’s chair carried real expectations. Within his first month, the channel said viewing figures had risen by 22 per cent compared with the previous year.

Why Did He Retire From Countdown?

He announced his decision to step down in December 2020. The break in filming during the pandemic had given him time to consider how he wanted to spend his later years. His final episode aired on 25 June 2021, and Anne Robinson took over the following week. He had presented the programme for more than nine years. That long run made him one of its most familiar hosts, with a style quite different from his stern role on The Apprentice.

Nick Hewer Wife, Partner and Children

He married Margo Spindler in 1973. They had two children, James and Kate, before divorcing in 1985. In later interviews, he spoke openly about how his devotion to work had affected his first marriage. He accepted responsibility for spending too much time on his career and too little time at home.

    Who Is Catherine McAllister?

Catherine McAllister is his long-term partner. She trained as a speech and language therapist and has helped deepen his interest in the profession. Hewer referred to Catherine as his wife in one interview, but later university and professional accounts called her his partner. Their current legal marital status has not been firmly established, so partner is the clearest description.

The couple have valued country life and family time. In 2024, they put their seven-bedroom Northamptonshire home on the market with an asking price of £2.5 million. Set in 12 acres, it had gardens, woodland, a tennis court and a swimming pool. They hoped to move to a smaller property nearer their family.

Nick Hewer Net Worth and Earnings

His wealth has been estimated at £30 million by Spear’s, a publication covering wealthy individuals. However, that is an older estimate, not an audited statement of his finances. His exact fortune in 2026 cannot be confirmed. Much of his success came from his public relations business, including its sale, rather than television alone. Presenting, public speaking and his book may also have brought income. No dependable figures have been made available for his individual television salaries or the sum paid for his company.

    TV Shows With Nick Hewer

Alongside his two best-known programmes, he explored farming, work, travel and social issues on television. He presented The Farm Fixer, helping rural businesses consider practical changes, and joined Mountford for The Town That Never Retired, which followed older people returning to work. They also worked together on We All Pay Your Benefits, Nick and Margaret: Too Many Immigrants? and a programme examining problems with Britain’s trains. These documentaries offered a different setting for his questioning style.

His guest credits include Who Do You Think You Are?, Have I Got News for You, Would I Lie to You?, Room 101 and Celebrity Antiques Road Trip. He competed in a celebrity edition of The Great British Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer and joined the BBC’s Pilgrimage in 2022. In 2023, he took part in a celebrity edition of The Weakest Link.

Nick Hewer Book and Charity Work

In 2018, he published My Alphabet: A Life from A to Z. The autobiography uses letters of the alphabet to explore childhood memories, business adventures, famous friendships and his unexpected move into broadcasting. Its personal stories show a man with interests far beyond the boardroom.

    Helping Children and Families

He has supported Hope and Homes for Children, which works to replace institutional care with loving family homes. In 2008, he joined the Mongol Rally in an old Renault 4 and raised more than £12,000 for the charity. Later visits to international projects strengthened his commitment to its work. He became a patron of Pancreatic Cancer Action in 2015 after losing people close to him to the disease. He has also championed speech and language therapy, becoming president of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists in 2019. Plymouth Marjon University honoured him with a degree that year, while Kingston University had recognised his business contribution in 2012.

    Life Beyond the Studio

Away from cameras, he has enjoyed travel, country living and vintage tractors. He also collects traditional hats from different countries. These quieter interests contrast with the tense boardroom scenes that first made him famous. His lasting appeal comes from real business experience and gentle humour. He did not set out to be a broadcaster, yet he created a second career that many full-time presenters would envy. At 82, he remains part of British television history.
