Nicola Horlick is a British fund manager, entrepreneur and charity leader who became one of the best-known women in London’s financial world. During the 1990s, newspapers called her “City Superwoman” because she managed major investment funds while raising a young family. Her story includes success, public disputes, business setbacks and deep personal loss. She has also worked in private investment, business lending and film production. Born in 1960, she is 65 years old as of October 2026.

    Early Life, Parents and Education

Nicola Horlick was born in Nottingham and grew up on the Wirral, in north-west England. Her father, Michael Gayford, ran a family business and took an interest in Liberal politics. Her mother worked as an architect. She also grew up with a younger brother. As a child, she enjoyed the coast near her home. She attended Kingsmead School in Hoylake, spent time at Cheltenham Ladies’ College and later studied at Birkenhead High School.

In 1979, she entered Balliol College, Oxford, as part of its first group of female undergraduates. She studied law but also loved acting. At university, she met fellow student Tim Horlick, who would become her first husband. As a teenager, she considered acting as a career and auditioned for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Oxford took her in a different direction. Her time there helped her gain confidence before entering a field where few women held senior posts.

    Nicola Horlick’s Career in Finance

    Rising Through the City

After university, she briefly worked in her father’s business before joining S. G. Warburg in 1983. She moved into investment management and became a director while still in her twenties. In 1991, she joined Morgan Grenfell, where she rose to lead its UK investment operations. Nicola Horlick team managed pension savings and other money belonging to clients, rather than her own personal fortune. By 1997, she had become one of the most visible figures in British finance.

    The 1997 Morgan Grenfell Dispute

Nicola Horlick career took a dramatic turn when Morgan Grenfell suspended her during a dispute over a possible move to another firm. She challenged the decision and travelled to Frankfurt to confront senior executives. The disagreement made national headlines. After leaving, she helped build an investment business for Société Générale. She later founded Bramdean Asset Management and became involved with Rockpool Investments.

At Société Générale, she helped grow the asset management operation quickly. Her official charity biography credits the business with building £7 billion in client assets within three years. She then sought greater control over her work through ventures of her own.

    Business Ventures and Setbacks

Bramdean focused on alternative investments. During the Bernie Madoff scandal in 2008, one of its funds had exposure to investments connected with his fraudulent scheme. The episode drew criticism of the fund’s investment choices. Horlick was not accused of running Madoff’s fraud. She went on to create Money&Co., which brought investors and businesses together through lending. Its focus later shifted towards specialist finance, including loans connected with legal cases. She also explored film production through Derby Street Films.

Money&Co. also examined plans for a digital bank. By 2025, that plan had been delayed as attention turned to litigation finance. Such changes show how her work has moved with new opportunities, rather than staying within traditional pension fund management.

Why Was She Called City Superwoman?

The nickname came from her unusual public position as a senior finance executive and mother of five children during the 1990s. She later had a sixth child. Her long working days and family commitments caught the media’s attention. Yet she did not fully embrace the image. Nicola Horlick acknowledged that paid childcare and household help gave her support that many working parents did not have. Her 1997 book, Can You Have It All?, examined the demands of work and family life. The nickname remains a major part of her public identity, although her career has covered much more than motherhood.

    Nicola Horlick Net Worth

Nicola Horlick precise wealth in 2026 is not publicly confirmed. Some websites give estimates reaching $100 million, but these figures are not backed by a full account of her assets and debts. An estimate published in 2003 placed her wealth as high as £23 million at that time. It reflected a different stage of her career and cannot be treated as her current fortune. Her earnings have come from senior finance roles, company ownership and investments. Figures for the billions of pounds she managed on behalf of clients should never be confused with money she personally owned.

    Nicola Horlick Husband and Marriages

    First Marriage to Timothy Horlick

Nicola Horlick married investment banker Timothy “Tim” Horlick in 1984 after meeting him at Oxford. They built a family while pursuing demanding careers. The couple separated in 2003 and divorced in 2005. Tim died in August 2026, aged 65.

    Second Marriage to Martin Baker

In 2005, she met journalist and novelist Martin Baker during an interview. They married in 2006, forming a blended family that included his three children from an earlier relationship. Martin died from prostate cancer in 2022. Horlick later wrote movingly about his illness and called for better awareness of the disease. There is no confirmed later marriage.

Nicola Horlick Children and Family Tragedy

Nicola Horlick had six children with Tim: Georgina, Alice, Serena, Antonia, Rupert and Benjamin, also known as Benjie.

    Remembering Georgina

Their eldest daughter, Georgina, developed leukaemia as a child. She received treatment, including a bone marrow transplant, but died in November 1998 at the age of 12. Nicola has spoken about the pain of losing her daughter and the strain that long periods in hospital placed on family life. Her experience shaped her commitment to helping people affected by blood cancer.

    A Lasting Charitable Commitment

In 2021, she became chair of Anthony Nolan, a charity that helps patients find stem cell donors. Its work has special meaning for her family because a donor was found for Georgina during her treatment. Her charity leadership sits beside her business career as an important part of her life.

    Politics and Recent Work

She stood for the Liberal Democrats in Chelsea and Fulham at the 2019 general election. She received 12,104 votes and finished second to Conservative candidate Greg Hands. In 2019, Oxford’s Balliol College also made her an Honorary Fellow. She received a Champion of Change award in 2015 and has discussed working motherhood in many public interviews. More recently, she has remained active in business. In January 2026, she became interim non-executive chair of Hamak Strategy, a company with interests in gold projects and digital assets. She has continued to be identified as its chair in company announcements later that year.

    The Legacy of Nicola Horlick

Nicola Horlick life cannot be captured by a single nickname. She broke through barriers in investment management, built businesses, faced difficult public challenges and raised a large family through periods of joy and grief. Her financial success has drawn attention, but her work for blood cancer patients gives her story another dimension. From the City of London to charitable leadership, she remains a recognised figure whose experiences connect ambition, responsibility and resilience.
