Mark Wood built his name through raw pace, courage and a style of fast bowling that could change a match within minutes. Born in Ashington, Northumberland, he became one of England’s quickest bowlers and played a major part in two World Cup-winning teams. His career was also shaped by repeated injuries. Ankle, elbow, thigh and knee problems tested him for years, yet he kept returning to international cricket. His ability to bowl above 90 mph made him a rare weapon for England across Tests, One Day Internationals and T20 cricket.

    Who Is Mark Wood?

Mark Andrew Wood was born on 11 January 1990 in Ashington, Northumberland, England. As of October 2026, he is 36 years old. He is a right-handed batter and right-arm fast bowler. His strongest skill has always been pace. Unlike many tall fast bowlers, Wood creates speed through an explosive run-up, quick arm action and powerful body movement. Wood spent much of his domestic career with Durham. He also represented England from 2015 until his international retirement in September 2026.

Mark Wood Height and Physical Style

Mark Wood stands close to 6 feet tall, or roughly 1.82 to 1.83 metres. His height is not unusual for an international fast bowler, which makes his pace even more impressive. He uses a fast approach to the crease and attacks the pitch with energy. His bowling action allows him to generate sharp speed without needing an extremely long run-up.

Mark Wood Early Life and Cricket Journey

Wood grew up in Ashington, a Northumberland town with a strong sporting tradition. Former England fast bowler Steve Harmison also came from Ashington, and Wood admired his rise to international cricket. His father, Derek Wood, played an important part in his early cricket development. Wood has spoken about playing serious garden cricket with his father while growing up. He played for Northumberland before moving into Durham’s professional system. His first-class debut for Durham came in 2011.

    Rise Through Durham Cricket

Wood became part of a successful Durham side and helped the county win the 2013 County Championship. His speed soon attracted England selectors. By this stage, he had already shown the ability to take wickets with both pace and movement. England needed a bowler who could offer something different from traditional swing and seam options.

    Mark Wood England Career

Wood entered international cricket in 2015. He made his ODI debut against Ireland in May 2015. Later that month, he made his Test debut against New Zealand at Lord’s. His T20 international debut came against New Zealand in June. His first Test wicket was Brendon McCullum, one of the most attacking batters of his generation.

Mark Wood and the 2015 Ashes

Wood quickly became part of England’s Ashes plans. During the fourth Test at Trent Bridge in 2015, he took the wicket that completed Australia’s second innings and confirmed England’s Ashes victory. It was an important early moment in his Test career and showed that he could perform under major pressure.

    Mark Wood Cricket Statistics

Wood completed his international career with strong numbers across all three formats. He played 38 Tests and took 119 wickets. His best Test bowling figures were 6 for 37. In One Day Internationals, he played 70 matches and took 80 wickets. He also played 38 T20 internationals, taking 54 wickets. Across Tests, ODIs and T20Is, Wood finished with 253 international wickets from 146 matches.

    Mark Wood Fastest Ball

One of the biggest questions about Wood concerns his top speed. His fastest recorded delivery reached 97.73 mph, equal to roughly 157.3 km/h. He bowled it to David Warner during the 2021 Boxing Day Ashes Test in Melbourne. Wood came close to this speed many times during his career. In 2024, against West Indies at Trent Bridge, he reached 97.1 mph. He also produced an over with an average speed above 94 mph, showing how well he could maintain extreme pace.

    Mark Wood World Cup Success

Wood was part of two of England’s greatest white-ball teams.

    2019 Cricket World Cup

England won the 2019 ODI World Cup after defeating New Zealand in a dramatic final at Lord’s. Wood played a major role throughout the competition. He took 18 wickets and gave England extra pace during the middle and final overs. He also dealt with physical pain during the competition. A side problem affected him near the end of the World Cup, but he continued helping the team.

    2022 T20 World Cup

Wood became a double world champion when England won the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. He took nine wickets in four matches and was one of the quickest bowlers in the tournament. A hip problem kept him out of the semi-final and final, but his performances earlier in the event helped England reach the knockout stage.

    Mark Wood Ashes Performances

The Ashes became a major part of Wood’s career. During the 2021–22 series in Australia, England struggled as a team, but Wood finished with 17 wickets. He took a career-best six wickets for 37 runs in Hobart. His greatest Ashes impact came again in 2023.

England were 2–0 behind when Wood entered the series at Headingley. His pace immediately changed the contest. He took 5 for 34 in Australia’s first innings and finished with seven wickets in the match. He also scored useful lower-order runs as England won the Test. His performances during the 2023 English season helped him become one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2024.

    Mark Wood IPL Career

Wood also played in the Indian Premier League. He joined Chennai Super Kings in 2018 before later becoming part of Lucknow Super Giants. Lucknow secured him at the 2022 IPL auction for a fee close to £735,000. Injury prevented him from playing that season. In 2023, he returned and produced a superb 5 for 14 against Delhi Capitals. He later left the tournament to return home for the birth of his daughter.

    Mark Wood Injury History

Injuries were one of the hardest parts of Wood’s career.

    Ankle Problems

His early international years were affected by repeated problems with his left ankle. He required several operations, including three procedures within a short period. Despite those setbacks, he returned with his pace still intact.

    Elbow, Thigh and Hip Injuries

In 2022, Wood needed surgery on his right elbow. Surgeons treated bone and scar tissue linked to an impingement. He later suffered a hip problem during the 2022 T20 World Cup. In 2024, a right-thigh strain forced him out of part of England’s series against Sri Lanka. Further scans then found a bone stress injury in his right elbow.

    Mark Wood Knee Injury

His left knee became the most serious problem during the final stage of his England career. In 2025, Wood underwent surgery after ligament damage was found in his left knee. He later returned for the 2025–26 Ashes but suffered another problem with the same knee during the first Test in Perth. The injury eventually prevented him from continuing at the physical level needed for international cricket.

    Mark Wood Wife and Children

Mark Wood is married to Sarah, who is also widely known as Sarah Lonsdale before marriage. The couple married in December 2018. They have two children. Their son, Harry, was born in 2019. Their second child, a daughter, was born in 2023. Wood has often spoken warmly about his family and the support they provided during difficult injury periods.

    Mark Wood Retirement

Wood announced his retirement from international cricket on 22 September 2026. Medical advice played a major role in the decision. Continued problems with his left knee meant the physical demands of Test and 50-over cricket were no longer realistic. His final international match came against Australia in Perth during the 2025–26 Ashes. Wood left England cricket with 253 international wickets, two World Cup titles and a reputation as one of the fastest English bowlers of his generation.

Mark Wood Net Worth and Earnings

There is no reliable confirmed figure for Wood’s personal net worth. His earnings came from England contracts, Durham cricket, international match fees, sponsorships and franchise cricket. His IPL deals were valuable, but contract values should not be treated as proof of his total wealth.

    Mark Wood Legacy

Mark Wood’s career was built on speed, bravery and persistence. He won the 2019 ODI World Cup, the 2022 T20 World Cup and played important roles in major Ashes matches. His fastest delivery reached 97.73 mph, placing him among the quickest England bowlers of the modern era. Repeated injuries stopped him from playing as often as his talent might have allowed, but they also made his comebacks more impressive. From Ashington to World Cup glory, Wood created a career defined by pace, character and determination.
